Internet Explorer (IE)  changes with XP SP2
New IE features, behavior changes, side-effects and trouble-shooting.

With the XP SP2 service pack, Microsoft introduced several important changes to Internet Explorer to enhance the security. This page attempts to list all(*) changes and their possible side effects.

  1. File Downloads: The file download ability can only be initiated by a user click. Thus pages that delay the download a few seconds and have an ad before launching the file will now fail.
How to restore the old SP1 download settings
  2. Popup Windows: These may now only be initiated by a user action, not automatically, and only one popup will be created based on that user action. This means that a popup cannot spawn a popup, even if the original was spawned by a click.
How to allow blocked pop-up windows
  3. Some Java Script code works well on online pages but generates a warning when used in local pages (web pages that are stored on your computer's hard drive).
How to allow local active content
  4. The MS Java Virtual Machine is no longer distributed. If your website needs Java, you should direct your users to the SUN Java download page.
  5. ActiveX controls: The modal dialog will no longer popup automatically. Users must specifically click on the place holder to install controls.
  6. Malicious web pages (JavaScript, VB script code ) can no longer change the browser to a full screen window. They code will only launch a maximized window instead of fullscreen.
  7. Malicious web pages (JavaScript, VB script code ) can no longer move the status bar, title bar or toolbar off of the visible screen.

If you know other changes or side effects of XP SP2 with Internet Explorer that are not listed here, please let us know

Note for users of iMacros PRO and Scripting Edition: The changes only affect the iMacros Internet Explorer Browser-Plugin. The stand-alone iMacros Browser itself is not affected by these SP2 changes. For example, downloads still start automatically even with the new SP2 IE default settings.
